Roland SC-55 soundfonts, one by Patch93 and one by EmperorGrieferus (the latest versions of each, of course). You can even hear Bobby Prince briefly praising the General MIDI sound as being far superior to Soundblaster/AdLib/OPL in the "visit to id software 1993" video, so these soundfonts can be considered Bobby Prince Approved, at least as of 1993. Since every version of Windows comes with gm.dls, you pretty much can't go wrong. Despite their basic sound which has been mocked to no end, just about every MIDI sounds decent with them (and was written using them). These are obviously the "most legitimate" soundfonts. Roland SCC-1 soundfonts, " SCC1T2.sf2" and " gm.dls". With that outta the way, here are the best soundfonts I've found in my travels: There are at least 50+ soundfonts I've tried that are not being mentioned here because they were so shitty, or in some cases only had a sound that worked with a very specific variety of MIDI - I'm in it to find all the good "general purpose" soundfonts, not stuff with only niche uses. If they're good only on one or none, they get the boot. If they can do all 3 of those distinct styles reasonably well, I keep them. I usually test them out with a general Rock/Doom-like MIDI, an 80's pop-like MIDI, and an orchestral MIDI to see how well rounded they are. I've been going crazy collecting soundfonts the last year or so.
